All you ever wanted to know about Carnival in Milan

What is the Ambrosian Carnival and why is it different from the Roman rites? Keep reading to learn more about a unique tradition in Italy, .

Origins and traditions.

Carnival traditions and celebrations have ancient origins. It possibly has its roots in a primitive festival honouring the beginning of the new year and the rebirth of nature, though it is also possible that the beginnings of Carnival in Italy may be linked to the pagan Saturnalian festival of ancient Rome.

The first day of Carnival varies with both national and local traditions. It also changes every year according to the religious tradition The word “Carnevale” derives from the latin “carnem levare” which means to take away or remove meat.
Ambrosian Carnival is celebrated in Milan, which starts when the Roman one is about to end. In most parts of the Archdiocese of Milan, Carnival lasts four more days, ending on Saturday after Ash Wednesday.

According to the legend, ambrosian carnival tradition dates back to IV century, when the bishop Ambrose of Milan asked his community to wait his return from a pilgrimage.
Actually, the Milanese rite recalls the original roman one. As a matter of fact, till VII century, the long Carnival, “carnevalone” was widespread in all the Italian peninsula.

Traditional mask

Like many Italian cities, Milan has its own typical mask, called Meneghino.
His name is just a diminutive form of “Domenico” as well as a reference to domenichino, a word used in Milan to refer to the servants that were hired only on Sundays (domenica in Italian) by the nobles that couldn’t afford permanent servants.
The character, derived from Commedia dell’arte tradition, is characterized by a strong sense of morality, a great dignity and a good dose of wisdom.

Traditional sweets

Although spread throughout Italy according similar tastes and recipes, every region has its own term to indicate: in Tuscany they are called cenci, grosoli in Friuli, sfrappole Emilia, frappe in Marche, bugie in Piedmont. In Milan they are known as “chiacchiere” and the sweet symbol of Carnival.
They are made with a mixture of flour that is fried and then dusted with powdered sugar.
Very popular throughout Italy are also “frittelle”, either empty or filled with custard, whipped cream and chocolate cream. In Milan they are known as “tortelli”.

Italian literature: our teachers’ book list

$

0

When you want to learn a foreign language, you have to consider various skills: reading, writing, conversation, translation … for all this it is crucial to memorize a new vocabulary.

How to train your memory to get the most out of our study?

In general, it is easier to memorize something when we are dealing with topics that interest us. For those who love reading, reading a good book with the right concentration can be the right incentive to improve your vocabulary and get the most from reading.

We asked our Italian teachers to suggest their favorite Italian literature books, who better than them? Here they are subdivided by linguistic proficiency.

 A1 / A2

Pasta per due, Giovanni Ducci

A book about the misunderstandings and common experiences of those living in a foreign country for their first time. A fun and original story that helps to reflect on the most curious and peculiar expressions of the Italian language thanks to the included exercises.

We read it in class and it was greatly appreciated. The audio CD is useful for individual reading.

Marianna

 Delitto In Crociera, Valentina Mapelli

A murder mistery set on a Mediterranean cruise. Cultural notes and exercises of comprehension, grammar and vocabulary at the end of each chapter facilitate reading and also allow for a practical and immediate review. It includes audio files, offering a great support for pronunciation and memorisation.

Maria

Esco a fare due passi, Fabio Volo

I recommend Fabio Volo’s books in general for his colloquial style, everyday use expressions, and easy vocabulary for an elementary level. Esco a fare due passi is the first novel of Volo and it was a huge public success. It’s the story of a guy around thirty years and of his relationship with women and the working world. A light and pleasant reading.

Anna

 B1 / B2

101 cose da fare a Milano almeno una volta nella vita, Micol Arianna Beltramini.

A sort of tour guide, history book, collection of real stories and legends. Above all, it is a book about the soul of Milan, the one that remains hidden behind the masquerade of happy hours, fashion and design. I recommend this book to those who live in Milan for long periods but have few opportunities to enjoy the city. A book to read at the park while eating an ice cream and to get lost with in the lesser-known streets of the city.

Sabrina

 Margherita Dolcevita, Stefano Benni.

I often recommend Margherita Dolcevita to my students because Benni is ironic and intelligent, and because he plays a lot with words (stimulating reflection and allowing to expand the vocabulary). In addition, there is that touch of surrealism that makes its novels special, almost unique in the contemporary Italian literary landscape.

Roberto

Olive comprese, Andrea Vitali

This story set in Bellano (one of the destinations of our excursions) tells irreverently the life of a town on Lake Como under facism. The protagonists are 4 guys, but the novel is full of astonishing and picturesque characters.

I generally recommend all of Vitali’s books for their mixed irony, culture and dialect. “Olive comprese” is the first I read. When I realized what the olives were, I giggled so hard.

 Dalila

 C1 / C2

 Palline di Pane, Paola Mastrocola

Emilia is a forty-year-old photographer with a husband working in India and two kids. Every summer she goes to Sardinia, helped by a Brazilian babysitter who doesn’t speak a word of Italian.

The book retraces the woman’s reflections and the beach chit chat, in a mix of paradoxical situations and exasperated everyday life. Ironic, light, but not too much, the book is a pleasing, at times snappy reading. Recommended for a C1 level, able to read between rows.

Irma

Lessico Familiare, Natalia Ginzburg

The novel tells the story of the writer’s family between the thirties and fifties of the twentieth century. Set in Turin, it describes the daily life of the Levi family through habits, behaviors and above all language.

I suggest it precisely for the liveliness of the lexicon and the importance of the words in the family history.

Brunella

L’Amica Geniale, Elena Ferrante

It is the first novel of a series consisting of four books. In fact, I suggest the whole saga because besides it has been highly acclaimed both by the critics as well as the public, the novels cover Italian history from the late 1950s to nowadays.

The tale is fascinating and engaging: from the point of view of two friends of different fortunes, it is possible to grasp the facets of contemporary Italy.

Silvia

The sun shines on Milan! The climate is mild in most of Europe thanks to the high pressure of the Azores causing an abnormal lack of rainfall. Milan’s secrets: guided tour through myths and legends

Looking for ideas for Halloween in Milan? We got ahead with our wonderful guided tour through the legends of Milan. Conducted by our Italian teacher and professional guide Emanuela Crepaldi, you’ll discover the secrets and mysteries of the city, from its foundation to modern days. Follow us!

Throughout its millennial history, Milan has guarded secrets and legends whose traces are still visible in the monuments that survived war and urban development, on the façades and aisles of churches and subterranean streets in the city.

Along with Emanuela, we learn to recognize the esoteric signs of the city and venture into Milan’s legends: myths such as Biscione, ghosts, superstitions and funny anecdotes.

Our guided tour begins at the old town centre, in the Church of San Bernardino alle Ossa near the University. From here we go to the Duomo, walking through via Dante we get to Castello Sforzesco, one of the most haunted places in Milan!

On the walls of the Sforzesco Castle we will identify the Biscione, animal symbol of the city: dragon or snake?

Not far from here, one of the first ghosts appears: in the proximity of Sempione Park we will discover the story of a Dama Velata (veiled lady) with her magnetic charm and her scent of violet.

But is not over yet! Milan is populated by famous ghosts like Lucrezia Borgia, who at night combs her hair kept in display at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana

Also in Milan you can see the famous Lady with an Ermine of the notorius Leonardo’s painting, who was the lover of Ludovico il Moro. The beautiful Cecilia Gallerani can be seen from one of the windows of the Carmagnola Palace just during the All Souls’ night.  The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed is celebrated annually on 2 November.

Our itinerary through the legends of Milan continues toward other stories and myths. Here, walking through the Basilicas Park and Piazza della Vetra, we visit the sites where the Italian Inquisition took place. Yet, in the same place, Sant’Eustorgio Church, the Biblical Magi’s relics are preserved.

Our tours are available all year round for our students. Find out more about ELLCI’s itineraries here.

How to recognize a good panettone in Milan

$
0
0

How it’s done

Panettone is a traditional Italian sweet.
It has a typical cylindrical shape, its leavening is natural and its soft paste is enriched with candied fruit, orange, cedar and raisins.

In Milan until 1900 there were a large number of bakers and pastry makers. Since the 1950s, the panettone of the large distribution can be found throughout Italy, while in Milan remain many traditional artisan laboratories.

Today it has acquired international fame and is also exported as a sweet symbol of Christmas in many countries.

Milan is the place to be to taste the original panettone recipe! But how can you recognize the authentic one and choose the best panettone? Let’s find out!

How to recognize traditional panettone

Since 2003 the tradition of panettone is regulated by a product specification that set the ingredients and their minimum percentages.

The true traditional panettone must have on its packaging the Pasticceri Committee of the Milanese Tradition ‘s logo and the inscription “Pastry product, to be consumed fresh by …” in addition to the indication “without preservatives”.

Beware of the ingredients

The traditional panettone ingredients provided by the product specification are:
water, flour from producers recognized by the Committee, sugar, fresh eggs and / or pasteurized yolks, milk, cocoa butter, butter, sultanate raisins, candied orange peel, candied cedar, natural yeast and salt.

Other permitted ingredients are: honey, malt and extract of malt, vanilla and natural aromas.

History and legends

The most famous legend dates the origins of panettone back in ‘400 at the court of Ludovico il Moro. The sweet prepared for the sumptuous Christmas lunch burned, but the kitchen gourmet, Toni, managed to prepare a substitute with the remaining ingredients. So the “’l pan del Toni”, the “panettone”, was born.
Other more romantic legends, however, see two lovers or a convent of nuns as protagonists.

The consecration of panettone came in 1700 when the Cisalpina Republic favored the opening of ovens and pastries.
Until then, white bread (called mica) was only reserved to wealthy people while the poor were doomed to millet bread. The only exception was Christmas day, when all the social classes could eat the same bread, the so called pan de sciori, or pan de ton, made of pure wheat and stuffed with butter, sugar and zibibbo .

Curiosity

From typical Christmas sweet to film genre. The term cinepanettone is an Italian neologism that refers to a series of farcical comedy films scheduled for release annually in Italy for the Christmas period. Cinepanettone screenings have become a national seasonal ritual. Switching from pop-corn to panettone is highly recommended for the occasion.

So enjoy your panettone slice and happy holidays!

Romance languages: a love story

$

0

The Romance languages (also know as the Romanic languages, Latin languages, or Neo-Latin languages) are group of related languages all derived from Vulgar Latin between the sixth and ninth centuries and that thus form a subgroup of the Italic branch of the Indo-European language family.

The major languages of the family include Italian – of course -, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian, all national languages.

The name Romance indeed suggests the ultimate connection of these languages with Rome. A popular form of Latin itself is in fact the precursor of this linguistic group.
Romance languages share a good proportion of basic vocabulary and a number of similar grammatical forms. That’s why is easier to learn a new language if it’s of the same family group. Italian mother tongue and students learning Italian will find easier to express themselves in Spanish or French.

Like any skill, practice makes perfect and a good knowledge of grammar in general and the peculiarities of a language family mean that every addition to your repertoire is a little easier.

Once you master Italian, why not take the opportunity to travel around Europe and dive in another Romance language? And if you plan to stay for a while, then consider a language course, like some Spanish courses abroad.  A few phrases will get you far, but a brief understanding of the language itself will get you even further.

TOP 5 REASONS TO LEARN ITALIAN

More and more people around the world are choosing Italian as second language. Italian follows English, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese in the rankings of most popular languages among students. But while the top three can boast hundreds of millions of speakers and have clear CV-boosting potential, the appeal of Italian is somewhat less obvious.
There are many reasons why people, both young and mature, want to learn Italian.

1. LEARN ITALIAN AND DIVE INTO CULTURE!

According to UNESCO most of the world’s cultural heritage sites are in Italy. With 51 Italian properties inscribed on the World Heritage List, Italy leads the world ranking. In fact, we have more masterpieces per square mile than any other country in the world.
Italian is the main language of melodrama and lyric music, of gastronomy as well as of fashion.

The Italian authors (from Petrarca to Gramsci or Leopardi) are the most loved and read abroad and finally

2. LEARN ITALIAN FOR THE LOVE OF FOOD!

The world is experiencing a growing obsession with Italian food. Don’t stop at pizza, pasta and lasagne, any Italian region has its own culinary tradition and flavour with even more varieties from town to town.

Moreover, Italian is the language with the highest number of words for naming food, restaurants, dishes and so on. Impress your date by ordering with confidence at an authentic Italian restaurant.

3. LEARN ITALIAN TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR HOLIDAYS

In 2018, the Italian fashion capital Milan welcomed 6.05 million international arrivals. If you come this far, it’s no surprise that Italy is one of the main tourist destinations in the world.

It’s always nice to be able to communicate with the locals in their own language. So even if you’re just going on holiday for a couple of weeks a year, this is a great reason to learn Italian as the locals will really appreciate you making the effort to speak Italian to them.

4. LEARN ITALIAN TO STUDY IN TOP RANKING UNIVERSITIES

the Italian University System is competitive in a wide variety of disciplines: three Italian Universities – two Milanese, Politecnico and Bocconi, and one in Rome, La Sapienza – stand out in the world top 10 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Furthermore, these Italian Universities are among the fifty best in the world in 21 disciplines, six more than in 2017, reaching excellent results in very different subjects such as Finance and Archeology, Physics and Performing Arts.

5. LEARN ITALIAN AND USE IT TO FIND NEW OPPORTUNITIES!

No matter your intention to use Italian on a daily basis or occasionally, having the knowledge of a second language can benefit you in many ways. For example, you can write on your resume or CV that you attended a foreign language school and lived abroad. New opportunities can present themselves in ways you cannot imagine initially. You’ll make friends when you visit, discover new places and impress your potential employer with your acquired soft skills.

Finally, learning Italian may also not be a necessity, but something people actively choose to do – for fun, for love, and maybe on a whim – is part of what makes it such a bella lingua.

Women and foreign languages

-The A1 class struggling with prepositions-

Approximately 65% of ELLCI students are women, but anyone in a foreign language class, faculty or course has faced a female majority. It is natural to wonder why these proportions are. Is it a personal attitude or does this tendency derive from stereotypes that see women with more reach for humanistic subjects?

According to Rebecca Rogers, the learning of foreign languages was a fundamental element in the education of young bourgeois of the nineteenth century. But even if today the languages are the discipline with the highest female characterization, can we really identify the reasons for female fortune in the study of languages in a social habit of the last century?

Many researchers and linguists have addressed the question. And for the majority of them, it is not sex that determines our ability to learn a new language, but the students’ social and cultural environment.

Studies conducted in Europe, East Asia and Latin America have shown that men and women use different tools to learn a language. Men use only one method, while women women take a comprehensive approach that uses different learning tools, such as reading, writing, vocabulary and pronunciation. Different methods, however, do not involve different results.

The greater presence of women in foreign language courses can therefore only be due to different tastes, desires and professional ambitions between men and women.

What is your experience in studying languages? We are curious to hear your opinion, let’s debunk this myth!
