Schermata 2015-03-13 alle 13.44.36  Yuzo – 26 years – Japan

Why have you chosen to study Italian?

Ian: “I have always been very passionate about the Italian culture, football, food, music, etc. I view learning Italian language as an optimum key to approaching the Italian culture.”

Aidan: “I came to Milan to work as an au pair for my gap year. When I first got here, the children only spoke Italian, so I started taking courses, so it’s easier to communicate with them and people around me.”

Yuzo: “I want to study South Italian Fashion Culture and I have an interview with a craftsman of this industry, so now I’m studying Italian language.

Why have you chosen ELLCI as your Italian language school?

Ian: “I have chosen ELLCI, because I felt that you could come here without any previous Italian knowledge and you can just can join the beginners course. The set up of the class would be suited for that kind of learning. Since I didn’t know Italian before, this was a very good set up for me.”

Aidan: “My host mum has found the school for me. She has lived in Milan for whole her life and she has asked her friends and everybody said that ELLCI was the best choice. Since coming here it was an intense immersion. Going to class every single day I rapidly learnt way much more than I would have learned on my own.”

How are the courses and the teachers?

Yuzo: “I often have some questions and my teacher Alessandra is very good and kind in teaching Italian in Italian or English.”

Ian adds: “ It’s good that the teachers teach in Italian language as far as it’s possible. And only if it’s necessary the teachers would explain it in English. You really get used to hearing Italian language all the time and you are always encouraged to speak in Italian, even though you get it wrong.”

“It also helps when the teachers bring up different elements to the learning environment, like listening to the music, so you get the influence of the language in many different channels.”

“Through the course you get to explore different parts of Milan, as the school organises excursions and you also get to meet other students of the school.”

Aidan: “I always felt like a typical American stereotype, as I didn’t really know any foreign language. I was super nervous in gaining fluency in a foreign language. At ELLCI it was a totally different language learning experience, than I had before. It’s so engaging and I felt a really good and positive reinforcement, even when it’s challenging.”

“The course definitely made my life easier within a month. When the kids are speaking, I pretty much know what they want and it’s very helpful. I have developed an ear for a language.”

“I was worried about meeting other people my age, but at school I was able to make friends from all around the world.”

How has your experience of living in Italy been so far?

Yuzo: “I like the fashion culture, climate and especially for me the Italian food is very good.”

Ian: “I love it here in Italy. You can have a really good quality food for a little money. Also I love that you can easily travel around Italy. The train tickets are cheap, so even though you live in Milan, you still have the whole Italy to explore.”

Aidan: “I definitely felt the same way. This is my first time in Europe. I found Italians to be very welcoming. Italy has a very specific way in enjoying life, that I’ve really had enjoyed experiencing. Wine and food.. and Milan is amazing!

Italian movies

Watching movies is a great way for you to improve your Italian and to put knowledge into practice!

In Italy all foreign films are dubbed, that’s why you can choose any movie. Italian films though are richer in idioms and collocations. They are created for native Italian speakers, therefore, the language is spoken quickly, with native accents and pronunciation and sometimes using idioms and regional expressions or even dialects.

Choosing a film to watch that is suitable for your level of proficiency can be difficult. Don’t be afraid, you can start with a movie you already know or one that uses simple language. Gradually, you can train with more and more complex films.

For an authentic immersion in Italian culture, we suggest a few titles to see in the original version:

Six reasons why summer is the best time to study Italian in Milan

Summer is so often the best time to travel and experience new places. Maybe it is the hot sunny days and long warm evenings – perfect for chilling outdoors – that make summer the ideal time to encourage new friendships and unforgettable experiences!

If you are studying Italian, you will already know that learning a new language requires a lot of commitment. That’s why, during your free time, being in a city that offers you plenty of options makes it easier to make the most of your stay abroad!

For this reason a Study Holiday in Milan offers a unique experience. From June to September the roads free up of cars and passers-by, making it easier to visit the main attractions of the city centre, although the city never empties completely. Indeed, there are always events and opportunities to stay outdoors ‘al fresco’ experiencing the vibrant local culture and practising your Italian.

In addition to city guided tours organized by ELLCI, here are some tips to enjoy the city after your hours of productive study at school:

1. Relax in a place between water and theatre: the art nouveau pool

caimi

Caimi, the historic art nouveau pool from the ’30s, reopens to the public on June 23 following restoration works. It will be open Monday to Friday from 14.00 onwards. The swimming pool, adjacent to the Teatro Franco Parenti, will also host events, performances and courses for all ages, keeping true t0 the original ‘30s design. Info > la piscina Caimi

2. Sport and sun at Idroscalo, “The sea of the Milan”

The seaplane base (Idroscalo) was also opened in the ’30s, and was soon nicknamed “The sea of Milan.” Since then, it has established itself as a fantastic summer meeting place for socialising, sports clubs and leisure activities. For those of you with a mind to relax you can sunbathe then cool off in the two outdoor swimming pools surrounded by lush greenery, and for those of you with a more sporting nature, you can take full advantage of the numerous sports activities.. Info > www.idroscalomilano.com

3. Re-visit the international spirit of Expo

Expo-Milano-2015-Il-tramonto-su-Expo

The exhibition space dedicated to Expo 2015 opens again for free and becomes a complex that will house exhibitions, sports and concerts. From Friday to Sunday, from 14.30 to 23.00, there is free access to: 5 of the XXI Triennial exhibitions; Planetarium Vegetable garden with 9000 plants, vegetables and herbs; Open Air Theatre for concerts and shows; light shows of the Tree of Life; and beach and sport area. The organisers hope the expo will offer something for everyone all in one dedicated space. Info > www.experiencemilano.it

4. A summer of concerts

From June 10 to August 7, 2016 Market Sound, a Festival at Mercati Generali in Milan, inaugurates its Second Edition. A packed programme of live concerts, filled with the great names of Italian and international music, quality food for all tastes and fun – including a relaxation area and beach volleyball. Info > marketsound.it

5. Discovering the countryside in Milan

secret_CascinaMartesana

Milan isn’t just skyscrapers, but a city to discover, to get lost in, fall in love with and to stumble across unexpected locations! One such location is Cascina Martesana. In the early 1900s this was the set of “El bagnin de Gorla” a pool for men only, adapted from a canal. In the last few years Cascina Martesana has once again become a public and shared place, a meeting place for grilling, kicking back and relaxing outdoors amongst the local Milaneses. Info > www.cascinamartesana.com

 6. Cinema under the stars

AriAnteo

From June 1 to September 15 AriAnteo once again returns to Milan. An event that for almost thirty years has brought outdoor cinema to some of the most beautiful and evocative locations in Milan. 5 squares are dedicated to the cinema: the Royal Palace, Cloister Glicini of the Humane Society, Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory, Cloister dell’Incoronata and Piazza Tre Torri, all of which offer the opportunity to experience cinematic masterpieces framed by beautiful architecture with an atmosphere like no other. Info > www.spaziocinema.info

The churches

Milan, along with a few other cities in Europe can boast the presence of nearly all architectural styles in history. From Renaissance to Gothic and Romanesque, to go back to the Carolingian period and early Christian.In addition to the famous Santa Maria Nascente, better known as the Duomo, we will visit the basilicas of Sant’Ambrogio, Sant’Eustorgio and San Lorenzo Maggiore, and the churches of Santa Maria delle Grazie and San Maurizio del Monastero Maggiore dedicated to the most important figures of that period: the bishops.

Autumn and foliage in Milan – city guide

$
0
0

The municipality of Milan prepared a guide to experience the best places to see fall leaves, the so called “foliage”.
What are we talking about? The word “foliage” comes from Old French feuillage, from feuille leaf, from Latin folium.
The English version, foliage, is preferred over the Italian word “fogliame”. In fact, it doesn’t carry the same evocative and synthetic meaning.
The technicians call it ‘autumn chromatism’, for everyone, simply, is ‘when the leaves change colour’ in the autumn.
Some consider it to be the most incredible time of the year. Gorgeous colours vibrantly encoring the end of summer as the trees prepare winter.
“Foliage” means that spontaneous phenomenon that characterizes especially some species of trees whose leaves gradually changes colour from green to yellow, orange, red and finally brown with subsequent fall to the ground.

The Municipality of Milan, whose stock of trees has about 260 thousand specimens, collected in a list the most spectacular views and intensely coloured tree species.

Here’s the 20 must see places:

  1. Viale Lazio / avenue Cyrene: Tilia platyphyllos rows (lime);
  2. Via Sant’Elia corner via Osma: Ginkgo biloba (ginkgo), solitary specimen;
  3. Via Alberto da Giussano: row of Liquidambar styraciflua (sweet gum);
  4. Via Lazzaro Papi / Via Tiraboschi: rows of Acer platanoides (Norway maple);
  5. Via Saccardo 40: Parrotia persica (isolated specimen);
  6. Villa Garden Belgiojoso Bonaparte via Palestro: Taxodium distichum (Bald cypress) next to the pond;
  7. Via Zubiani 1 (municipal nursery): metasequoia (dawn redwood), solitary specimen;
  8. Largo La Foppa: Rhus typhina (sumac) near the entrance to the subway;
  9. Piazza De Angeli: Koelreuteria paniculata (tree of Chinese lamps);
  10. Viale Enrico Fermi near via Iseo: Ginkgo biloba (ginkgo);
  11. Via Zubiani (municipal nursery): rows of Liriodendron tulipifera (tulip tree);
  12. Via Trenno / cable Hippodrome (parking); Quercus palustris (marsh oak), solitary specimen;
  13. Via Park Chekhov-Omodeo-Kant: Quercus palustris (marsh oak);
  14. Public Gardens (Giardini Montanelli): 1. Ginkgo biloba group near the kindergarten ‘Montemerlo'; 2. Ginkgo biloba group near the entrance to the Piazza Cavour; 3. Taxodium distichum group along the banks of the pond;
  15. Parco Sempione: 1. the entire ‘telescope’ that visually connects the Piazza del Cannone Arco della Pace; 2. Parrotia persica group on the left of this telescope, near the pond; 3. row of Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Frisia’ to one of the inputs from Viale Gadio / Civic Aquarium;
  16. Garden of the Villa Comunale: solitary specimen of Platanus x hybrida (one of the oldest specimens of Milan) within the garden, along the boundary wall;
  17. Via Santa Sofia: row of Liriodendron tulipifera;
  18. Borsieri Via and Via Alberto da Giussano: Liquidambar styraciflua rows;
  19. Via Maratta: row of Gleditschia triacanthos;
  20. Via Piccinni: row of Ginkgo biloba.

For more information about Italian woods and foliage, we also recommend the suggestions collected from Touring Club Italiano.

Christmas officially kicks off on December 7, the day when we celebrate St. Ambrose, the patron saint of the city.

“Oh bej! Oh bej! the most important and traditional Christmas fair in Milan is held from 7 December (day of the patron saint of Milan, Ambrose) until the following Sunday.

Its name dates back to 1510 and comes from the exclamations of joy the Milanese children unleashed delegate of Pope, Giannetto Castiglione visiting Milan on 7 December. According to the legend, Giannetto wanted to ingratiate himself with the Milanese, and thus entered the city carrying boxes full of sweets and toys for the Milanese children. The Lombard expression “Oh bej! Oh bej!” Milanese standing for “oh so nice! oh so nice” is supposedly a reference to the cheerful cries of the Milanese children receiving presents from Giannetto.

Until 2006 the fair was held around the square dedicated to Sant’Ambrose and surrounding streets. Today is held around the Sforzesco Castle with more than 300 exhibitors expression of the Milanese tradition: sweets and Christmas or winter delicacies, handcrafts such as Christmas decorations, toys, antiques, souvenirs, bric-a-brac, and more.

Saint Ambrose Day is immediately followed by the Immaculate Conception Day (an Italian national holiday), also considered by many Italians the true beginning of the Christmas season and the day to start decorating the house and especially preparing the Christmas tree.
